Peace is the ability to be free from any disturbances and to dwell in a state of tranquility. It’s one of the most valuable assets you can have. Your peace is sacred and therefore it should always be protected. I’m not someone to promote selfish behaviours but sometimes the best way to take care of your health and peace is to ultimately put your needs first.
What does it mean to protect your peace?
It means to guard your state of mind. A huge aspect of your sense of peace is your mental state and preserving the positivity in your life.
What harms your peace?
Doubt, negativity, insecurity
If I’m super honest, in the past I was an over-giver, I gave my everything to relationships that ultimately tore me apart. I was a contributor to my own chaos, when relationships failed I struggled to move on and let go and I let negativity disrupt my peace. I let my thoughts consume me and I robbed myself of my inner peace had I only just come to terms with my situation. But alas we all live and learn.
How do I protect my peace now?
I focus on the things that make me happy, I focus on the things that will help me develop into a better person. And that’s not always easy. I struggle with loss, that someone can choose to not be present in your life. It rattles my brain and I start to question everything about myself and it destroys my peace.
I’ve made a conscious decision to not give anyone that kind of power over my life and although the journey hurts to grieve the relationship, pick myself back up and carry on. I guess that’s how I don’t shatter my peace.
“ You weren’t created to live a life of worry and anxiety”
If you’re currently going through a situation in your life where you’re constantly feeling uneasy and you can’t find peace. Here are my best coping mechanisms or exercises.
Spiritual Time
I turn on some worship music and I write letters to God. I tell him how I’m feeling, why I’m struggling and I declare His peace over me. And often this is all I need to feel a little better. I think verbalising or writing down your issues and pain can ultimately help you heal and find your inner peace again.
Bye to toxic people
I’m still learning to become comfortable with this because I don’t want to just kick people out of my life but it’s a huge part of me learning to let go. It’s understanding that not everyone has good intentions for your life even if you love them, not everyone wants to see you thrive. When you can get to a point where you are okay with that, peace will come.
The social media detox
Every now and then I, “the comparison queen” catch myself scrolling through Instagram nitpicking my life and comparing it to my online peers. And before I can let myself go down the rabbit hole of self-pity and despair I take the time I need to unwind from social media. Honestly, I think it’s a good practice in general for your mental health and not solely to protect your peace.
My peace means a lot to me, it’s not something I’m willing to sacrifice and you shouldn’t sacrifice it either. You deserve to live a life that makes you happy and that deeply roots you in who you are. My peace comes from Christ, on difficult days I can stand strong in that. Hold your peace close to you and don’t give it to anyone it’s yours to protect.
